International students currently are facing ongoing travel disruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic and are thus uncertain about when they will be able to travel abroad return to their study destinations.

It can be difficult to keep up with the most recent travel restrictions, as the policies and regulations are changing from country to country. This is true in terms of International students, as they have to keep up with the latest travel announcements while also embracing online learning at the same time.

United States

On April 27th 2021, the U.S. Secretary announced that international students would have an exemption from the Covid-19 travel restrictions from 1st August 2021.

All foreign students with F-1 and M-1 visas willing to pursue academic programme can continue their studies commencing from August 1 st , 2021 or later will now have access to the national interest exemptions (NIEs).

There is no need for students to secure a separate NIE to travel.

This exemption are applicable to those citizens of countries that include the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and all the countries in Europe's Schengen Area.

Students who wish to travel abroad must present their proof of vaccination in order to board a flight. Also, it has been announced that vaccines will be required for everyone returning to university this autumn at over 500 US colleges, including the University of California, Georgetown University, and Stanford University.

As advised by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), get tested three to five days after your arrival for a viral infection. Additionally, it is essential to note that each state in the U.S. currently has different rules, and you must follow each one of them upon arrival. However, you can get important travel information from the CDC when you use CDC travel planner.

Canada

Under current Canadian visa regulations, international students may travel to Canada as long as the following requirements are met:

1. Covid-19 test results must be negative 72 hours prior to your departure for the journey to be complete.

2. Without a valid student visa, also known as a study permit, or a letter of introduction from a university/collegiate institution stating you were approved for a study permit, you will not be allowed into the country.

3. You are required to attend a designated learning institution (DLI) with an authorized province or territorial readiness plan of Covid-19.

4. Even if you have a negative test, you must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Canada.

Anyone flying into Canada has to take a Covid-19 test upon arrival, and remain in a government-approved hotel for at least the first three days of the two-week quarantine, until they receive the result of the test they took when they entered the country. International students are allowed to transfer to their pre-planned DLI organized accommodation to complete their two-week quarantine once their test is confirmed to be negative. This list is useful when you are looking for and booking your spot in a government-sanctioned hotel.

You will have to implement the Covid-19 readiness plan, which involves your university describing how it will quarantine international students for two weeks. Also includes: where you will quarantine yourself, how you will get to your quarantine location, and anything else that you may need to have during your quarantine. While contacting your university may yield specifics on their Covid-19 readiness plan, you should also contact them directly.

You can only return to Canada if your institution is an approved DLI. You'll also need to show that you have enough money to support yourself when you arrive in Canada.

Australia

Australia has closed almost all its borders to the general public, with the exception of permanent residents and citizens. The only current exemption is the Trans-Tasman travel bubble opened on 19th April 2021, which means travels between New Zealand, without quarantine for selected Australians are allowed. However, if you are undertaking this travel for any circumstances, you must produce a negative Covid-19 test record.

There are still restricted flights in the country beyond the corridor, and even for Australian nationals, the number of persons authorized to enter is limited. International students who seek an exemption from the border ban must do so individually.

Reports indicate that New South Wales (NSW) has signed off on a plan to allow international students to return and implement a new student quarantine system. Previous similar proposals from other states have all been abandoned, and it is now expected that borders will stay closed for the majority of students through the second half of 2022 due to the recent federal budget's forecast.

You have the option of continuing your studies while still living abroad, or, if you're an international student currently in Australia, you also have the option to return to your home country and still complete your coursework. While it is important to be able to actively participate in online learning in order to maintain a current certificate of enrolment (CoE), you will need to make sure you can participate actively before your certificate of enrolment (CoE) expires in order to maintain your student visa status for the future.

If an international student would like to return to their home country to take a short leave, they can apply to have their situation assessed.

In order to keep students informed about significant changes to university policies, Australian universities should make their information available to students. Contact the Department of Home Affairs if you have any further visa enquiries.

United Kingdom

International students are permitted to travel in the UK under the current rules. A new plan announced that the UK government has plans to remove most Covid-19 restrictions by July 19th, 2021, which will help overcome social distancing barriers and set the total number of people who are allowed to meet.

By August 9th 2021, Scotland has also announced that it will lift its restrictions, while Whales and Northern Ireland are expected to do the same very soon in near future.

However, passenger locator forms must be completed and submitted within 48 hours of arrival in the UK. The form would require you to fill in certain information like your name, date of birth, gender, and nationality on this form. Your passport information, as well as your travel details and the address where you will be staying in the UK, will also be required. You can fill out the form on the UK Government website and submit it online.

As of January 2021, anyone who arrives in the country must have a proof of a negative covid-19 test to enter, no matter where he belongs to. The test reports should be no more than three days before your departure in the country. Even if you have already been vaccinated for Covid-19, you must still undergo this procedure. Along with printed paperwork on your device showing your results, with your date of birth, is required for your negative test report to be shown at the border to the agents.

Undertaking the current Covid-19 situation, the UK government has also implemented some traffic light system with different travelling expectation in the country. This traffic light system is expected to stay in place after the lifting of other restrictions on 19 th July’2021

You may verify your country's status and what you need for every level of travel.

If you have "residence rights," you should be exempted from the red-list ban, as you are a Tier 4 visa holder, a new student visa holder, or a student visa holder using a biometric or pre-settled/settled status under the European Union settlement scheme.

A hotel quarantine in England will cost one thousand pounds per person for transportation, laboratory work, food, and accommodation. The cost of adding another adult is £650. Through this online booking system, you can book your reservation. Under the Test to Release scheme, you will be unable to leave quarantine early if you are travelling from a red-listed country.
